Few situations are as distressing as a Maryland motorcycle accident. However, when one occurs, you must remain calm and focused. Take these steps immediately after your accident.

Get to safety

Immediately after a motorcycle accident, find a safe place out of the road. Check yourself for injuries, but leave your motorcycle wherever it is; your safety is most important.

Call 911

Call 911 to ensure the police and an ambulance with emergency medical personnel arrive. Talk to the police officer who makes the accident report and ask where you can obtain a copy. Get the officer’s name and badge number.

Exchange information

Exchange names and contact information with the driver involved in the accident. Avoid making conversation and keep everything succinct. Also, exchange insurance information, driver’s license information and license plate numbers.

Take pictures

Take pictures of the accident scene and the damage to your motorcycle. Focus on the road conditions, skid marks, the weather and even your injuries if they are visible. Visual evidence may help strengthen your lawsuit.

Take notes of the accident

While the events of the accident are still fresh in your mind, take notes. It helps to document everything as you might forget crucial details later on while dealing with your injuries. Make a note of anything that the pictures you’ve taken might not capture. Jot down how you feel physically and what led up to the events.

Get medical attention

Seeking medical attention can greatly affect how you fare after a motorcycle accident. Even if you feel OK, you might have internal injuries that require prompt treatment. Doing so also gives you medical records you can add to your evidence.

Motorcycle accidents often leave catastrophic injuries and damages. You can’t always prevent them, but these steps might help when filing an injury claim.
