Water safety tips

Summers in Maryland are a great time to get together with family and friends on waterways. You can enjoy quality time and cool off. Staying safe at all times is crucial and can be done using these tips.

Keep hydrated and avoid alcohol

While you’re enjoying water activities, it’s important to stay hydrated. It can give you more energy and prevent certain health issues. You should also avoid alcoholic beverages, which can lead to impairment and put you at risk of an accident.

Protect yourself from the sun

Use a good waterproof sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher. Apply it generously on yourself and your children and try to stay in the shade as much as possible. Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours as your skin becomes wet from sweat or the water. Use sunglasses and a hat with a wide brim in direct sunlight. UV rays are harmful to your health and can cause sunburns and even skin cancer if you’re regularly exposed.

Always wear a life jacket

Wear a life jacket at all times. While you’re on the water, you never know when an accident might occur. If you go in for a dip, your life jacket is important even if you can swim if you’re in very deep water. Anyone who doesn’t know how to swim or who isn’t very good at it should keep their life jacket on at all times.

Be alert at all times

Remain alert at all times while on waterways. Some bodies of water might look calm but could be deceptively dangerous. When you’re aware of your surroundings, you can better anticipate potential danger, and better.

Take swimming lessons

If you don’t know how to swim or need a refresher, take swimming lessons. They can help keep you safe on waterways.

Using these tips can help you stay safe on waterways so you can enjoy your day trip.
